The project vision for Rottnest Island Resort in this RFDP (Request For Detailed Proposal) is for a world-class resort that is culturally sensitive, environmentally and financially sustainable and ‘of place’. A beautifully designed cluster of low-scale buildings, embedded in local landscaping and connected by a seamless continuation and extension of the Settlement, with engaging public open spaces, restaurants and bars for visitors and guests alike.
Respecting and acknowledging the dark history of The Quod and the Aboriginal Burial Ground to the North the Proposal recognises that this site has the potential to be one of the most significant focal points for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal reconciliation and spiritual healing in the state.
Our design vision for the Rottnest Island Resort is to celebrate the Whadjuk People of the Noongar Nations’ culture and Rottnest Island’s (Wadjemup – ‘place of spirits’) ancient ecology, flora and fauna, architectural heritage and its history as a much loved holiday destination.
The key design driver is melding of the colours, forms and textures that reflect the natural Rottnest Island landscape in the design of the Built Form and new landscapes, thereby creating the sense that the buildings are nestled in to the site. The introduction of earth bunding and endemic revegetation, together with subtly located Quokka-proof fencing, is part of the overall landscape strategy.
The landscape design is also based on creating outdoor spaces which are relevant and welcoming to local and wider Rottnest Community, with the layout of the spaces developed to encourage “outdoor social interaction”, as well as providing a strong landscape setting for the built form. Shade trees, revegetation plantings, seating opportunities, a range of activity spaces, and a simple materials palette, all combine to create a meaningful landscape environment for the Rottnest Island Resort.
Our studios are located on Whadjuk and Wadandi Noongar Boodja.
